There are many things you can do to prevent serious problems with your feet.

l Check your feet daily - look for red spots, swelling, Infected toenails or cracks in the skin.

l Check inside your shoes before you put them on. Make sure there is nothing inside to irritate your feet.

l Wash your feet daily - wash in warm water NOT hot! Do not soak your feet the skin will become dry.

l Keep the skin soft and smooth - rub a thin coat of lotion, cream on top and bottom of feet, not between the toes.

l Smooth corns and calluses gently - check with doctor on severity and treatment.

l Trim your toenails regularly - check with doctor on best method for you.

l Wear properly fitting shoes and socks at all times - do NOT go barefoot.

l Protect your feet from hot and cold _ sunscreen to prevent sunburn.

l Be more active - ask your doctor to help you plan a program suitable for you. Walking, dancing, swimming,
     and bicycling are good forms of exercise and are easy on the feet. Avoid running and jumping. Include a
     short warm-up period and a cool-down period. Do not forget to wear your properly fitted athletic shoes.

The Diabetic Foot

   Foot care is very important if you have diabetes, but especially if you have:

l Poor circulation

l Loss of feeling in your feet

l Changes in the shape of your feet

l Foot ulcers or sores that do not heal

     Here are a few more tips to help you:

  1. Knowing how and when to test your blood glucose.
  2. Take your medicines as prescribed.
  3. Eat regular meals that contain a variety of healthy, low-fat, high-fiber foods including fruits and vegetables.
  4. Stop smoking.
  5. Get physical activity each day.
  6. Follow your foot care plan.
  7. Visit your doctor regularly to have your feet checked.
